OMEA Solo and Ensemble Contest Information
-This is optional-
What is it?
Solo and Ensemble is an event that is sponsored by the Ohio Music Education Association. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to perform a solo or as a member of a small ensemble. Ensembles and solos are given a rating and comments by an OMEA adjudicator.
The 5 rating plan is as follows:
Rating I: An outstanding performance with very few technical errors and exemplifying a truly musical expression. This rating should be reserved for the truly outstanding performance.
Rating II: An unusual performance in many respects, but not worthy of the highest rating due to minor defects in performance, ineffective interpretation, or improper instrumentation.
Rating III: An acceptable performance, but not outstanding. Showing accomplishment and marked promise, but lacking in one or more essential qualities.
Rating IV: A poor performance showing many technical errors, poor musical conception, lack of interpretation, incomplete instrumentation, or lacking in any of the other essential qualities.
Rating V: A very poor performance indicating deficiencies in most of the essential factors, and indicating that much careful attention should be given to the fundamentals of good performance. This rating should be used sparingly and only when it is possible to cite major faults.
When is it?
Registration is due December 11, 2024 for those who would like to participate. Mr. Arnold will be sending out more detailed information about this event & give students a chance to sign up.
Contest is Saturday January 11, 2025
Where is it?
The event is held at Blanchester High School.
What time will my child perform?
The event chair at Blanchester will assign performance times. The directors may not know the final performance times until one week before the event. We will get times to parents as soon as we have them.
How much does it cost to participate?
Solo- $21
Ensemble- $26 per group
Canceled events cannot be refunded.
Music performed has to be on the OMEA list for your ensemble or solo instrument. You can click the link below to make sure your piece is on the required list. See a director about this if you have any questions.
Please see the link for more information:

Transportation
Parents should arrange transportation. Car-pooling is a great option especially for ensembles!
Solo Information
It is strongly suggested that students performing a solo have a private lesson teacher. Soloists are responsible for providing the piano accompaniment part and an original copy of the solo to be used by the judge. Soloists will be required to rehearse with the
accompanist 1-2 evenings before the event. The accompanist will set the specific dates.
If you need assistance finding an accompanist, please let me know.
When do the students practice and rehearse?
Only a limited amount of time can be given to students during class to rehearse. The majority of practice time should be
outside of school. Participating in an event like this requires a great deal of commitment and preparation time.
Please let us know if you have any questions. Woodwind and brass related questions to Mr. Arnold and Mr. Fields will handle percussion.

2024 High School Honor Band Information
OMEA District 13 offers Honor Band to individuals who want to take their playing to the next level. Auditions are required. Students who make the band will participate in a weekend of rehearsals and put on a concert in January. This is highly competitive and we have had several students from Edgewood participate in the past. I encourage any band member to audition who wants to. Please read over the information to understand the time commitment and expectations. Do not sign up to audition unless you are able to attend everything and be fully committed to the experience. See me if you have any questions.
Auditions are December 7th (9:00 AM to 4:30 PM).
Auditions for all bands will be held at Fairfield Creekside Middle School:
1111 Nilles Road Fairfield, Ohio 45014
Students may audition for Concert Band, Jazz Band or both. Copies of music are available in the EHS band room.
Students need to let Mr. Arnold know they are auditioning by November 13th so he can get them registered for an audition time. If you need a morning or afternoon time, please let me know and I can request it.
Make sure you are able to attend the honor band weekend rehearsals and performances before signing up for an audition. The dates and times are listed below for each ensemble. Make sure you practice your audition music and know your scales for the audition. Mr. Arnold will listen to each student play their music prior to the audition to make sure they are fully prepared. Also arrive 30 minutes before your audition time to find your audition room and warmup. Dress for success. Dress nice for the audition to let the judge know you are taking it seriously. The goal is to look and sound professional. Students who make the honor band will be responsible for completing an emergency medical form for OMEA as well as a $35 fee. Mr. Arnold will provide copies of the form prior to the honor band weekend.
Students may set up a time with Mr. Arnold after school if they wish to receive free coaching in preparation for the audition.
